It’s a Saturday night and you are trying to
figure out what to do tonight. Hang out with friends? Maybe go see a movie?
Sound like a basic night, not much thought into it.
Now, add the night stars, the sound of the
ocean’s breeze, a comfy couch and a cozy blanket and you have a Saturday well
served and FREE.
On the beaches of Bal Harbour, on the last
Saturday of every month, a feature film is presented for your enjoyment. Unlike
the traditional movie setting, you don’t get to pick this movie. So for those of
you, who are constantly planning every detail of your life or who don’t really
try stepping out of the box of comfort, this can be your night of spontaneity
and excitement. Imagine! All you
have to do is show up. The couches, chairs and blankets are already provided,
along with free popcorn. Just make sure you wear something warm or take someone
special to cuddle up with, for these past Miami winter nights have been a bit
breezy, especially on the beach.

This January’s last Saturday’s movie pick was
the award-winning musical documentary
For
Once In My Life.
The true
story of a band formed by individuals with disabilities. A moving story that
encourages and enlightens, giving hope that you can do anything you put your
mind to. There’s no excuse after this.
“T
he film is about breaking preconceived notions. It is an
opportunity to witness a balancing act between what people believe they can and
cannot accomplish,” says director Jim Bigham, who began this project at first
with hesitation. “We did not want to be a sympathy film, or to take a
particular slant like a public service message.” On the contrary, during the
viewing the audience’s reaction was of mere enjoyment. All around you hear
sympathy and aw along with laughter and joy to be a part of this band for just
that moment. “We've been honored, humbled and blown away by the band,” Jim says
on his experience with the film.
Javier Pena is the band’s director. He was originally hired as a part time choir teacher for those with disabilities that work at Goodwill. When he realized there was rhythm and repetition in a few individuals he saw it fit to create a band. And so he did. His inspiration and love for this group of individuals has opened the doors of possibilities, performing in their studio for a live audience as well as invites to perform in grand events, taking peoples breath away with their talent and sound. More importantly, Javier, not only as the band director, has been influential to this group as their teacher, friend, counselor, and for some the father figure they never had. Javier Pena helped with this film as Creative Director - “I wanted to see this film made to tell the world what people with disabilities—or any person period—can do when given an opportunity to succeed.”
